Cally24 vs voicemail: why callers hang up on the beep

Cally24 Team · 5 min read

When you can't answer, voicemail is the old default. It's free, it's easy, and it feels safe. The trouble is what happens on the other end: a lot of callers hang up at the beep and call the next business on the list. So the real question is how many of your callers ever turn into a message, and what you'd get if someone answered instead.

What happens when a caller hits voicemail

Think about the last time you called a business and got a beep. Did you leave a message? Many people don't, because they want an answer now and a callback "sometime" doesn't help with a leak, a lockout or a question about Saturday.

The ones who do leave a message often leave half of it. A first name, a number said too fast, "call me back about the thing." Then you play phone tag, and by the time you reach them they may have booked someone else. A typical voicemail leaves you with:

  • No name, or only a first name
  • A number you can't quite hear
  • No idea how urgent it is
  • No idea if they already called someone else

What it costs you

Voicemail is free on your phone bill. Its cost shows up somewhere else: in the calls that don't become a message at all. You don't see those callers in your inbox, so it's easy to think they don't exist. They found you on a map or a search page, you didn't answer, and the next number was one tap away.

What happens when Cally answers

Cally answers right away, in your business's name, and talks with the caller like a friendly front desk. It asks what they need, where they are and how urgent it is.

Then it does one of two things. It books the caller into a free time in your calendar, or it takes their details. Within minutes, you get the lead by email, by phone alert and in your dashboard, with a short summary you can read in a few seconds.

"But my customers know to leave a message"

Some do, and your regulars might be among them. New callers are different. They don't know you yet, you're one of several numbers they found, and they have no reason to wait for you. Those are exactly the callers you most want to reach, and they're the ones most likely to hang up.

When voicemail is fine

Voicemail can still work if almost all your calls come from people who already know you, and nothing is ever urgent. If that's your business, keep it.

If new customers call you, if you're often on a job, or if calls come in at night, an answering receptionist will catch what voicemail misses.

What one afternoon looks like

You're on a job from 1:00 PM to 4:00 PM with your phone in the truck. At 1:40 PM, a new customer calls about a quote. With voicemail, they hear the beep and call the next business. With Cally, they hear your business name, explain what they need and book a time on Friday.

At 3:15 PM, a regular calls about a leak that's getting worse. Cally flags it as urgent and sends you an alert. When you get back to the truck, you know exactly who to call back first, and why.

You keep your number

You don't need a new phone number. You set your phone to forward calls to Cally when you don't answer, so your phone still rings first. If you answer, nothing changes. If you don't, Cally answers in place of the beep. See how to forward your calls.

What it costs

Cally starts at $99 a month with 240 minutes included, and you pay only for the minutes Cally talks. Extra minutes are $0.29 each. See pricing for the details.

Quick check: is voicemail costing you?

  • Do new customers call you, not just regulars?
  • Do you miss calls while you work?
  • Do you get calls after hours or on weekends?
  • Do you play phone tag to get basic details?
  • Does spam fill your voicemail box?

If you said yes to two or more, try a receptionist that answers. You can hear one built for your business, built from your website in 30 seconds.

Common questions

Will callers know they're talking to an AI?

Cally sounds friendly and natural, and it answers in your business's name. If a caller asks, it's honest about what it is. Most callers simply care that someone answered and that their request was taken.

Can I still use voicemail too?

You can, but you don't need to. Calls you don't answer go to Cally instead of the beep. Every call is written down, so there's nothing left to listen to later.

What if the caller only wants to leave a quick message?

Cally takes it, just like voicemail would. The difference is that you get it as a short written summary with the caller's name and number, not a recording you have to play back.
